Wednesday 15 March: Signs and Symbols: the hidden messages in art - Valerie Woodgate
The language of symbols is a fascinating study, and one that is essential for a full understanding of art, whether medieval or modern.
In this lecture Valerie Woodgate will look at works of art from the 14th century to the present day and examine the way in which artists have used signs and symbols to give deeper layers of meaning to their work.
From the interpretation of symbols in Christian art and Greek myths,to the use of signs and symbols in 17th century Dutch painting, Hogarth’s Moralities, Victorian as well as modern art will be explored.
